Why I Converted from Mormonism to Catholicism (with Thomas Smith)

In today’s episode, evangelist and Bible scholar Thomas Smith tells his story about converting from Mormonism to the Baptist faith and then eventually becoming Catholic. He explains what it is about Christianity that made him question his Mormon faith, and he also tells us four things he wishes we’d learn from the Mormon community. He finishes the show by walking us through two simple-to-implement prayer practices that can change your life.

  1. Enjoyed the Podcast! I had an issue with only one point made by the guest speaker. He suggested that we could be more successful if we incorporate ‘Protestant Joyfulness’ into our Liturgy. And. perhaps that would help with ‘some’ types of Evangelization. I know this may be a contentious point, but I believe that one of the reasons that so many Catholics are abandoning their faith is the Protestantization of our churches and Liturgies. They’ve lost their focus and don’t ‘get’ why we are at Mass. As a community, we’ve lost focus on the fact that we’re principally at Mass to adore and worship God through His Real Presence. The Mass is a real communion with God and each other as members of the Body of Christ. It is not a revival or a party! We can adopt joyful gatherings outside the Mass, but please leave the Eucharistic Celebration as a solemn and beautiful form of worship that is proper in the Lord. If we shift our focus from the ‘head’ to the ‘body,’ we miss the point; our children won’t truly understand why we’re there. The Mass cannot be just a social gathering, otherwise, how can we argue for the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism? We will fall victim to the heresy of ‘Indifferentism.’ Besides, what we have to offer, especially when we celebrate the High Mass (in Latin), is not only beautiful and deeply spiritual, it is also something that can’t be found anywhere else. It is Heaven on Earth!

    • Very well said. As Pope Francis has said, “ The Mass is not a show “. Jesus has always sought the quite whenever he prayed to his Father. We need the reverential silence to feel the divine.

      • Sorry, but I can’t agree with you. I have seen some very Spirit filled services that were not silent by any means, with people being uplifted and rejoicing in the Lord. Paul tells us to ‘rejoice always in the Lord. Again I say rejoice!’ We need more of that in our church. It doesn’t have to be a ‘show’. There is little to no rejoicing in our church. Most people don’t even sing the hymns or the ‘Gloria’. They look like they would rather be anywhere but where they are. Or like someone ran off with their wife and shot their dog. We have victory thru Christ and we act like we are the saddest people in the world.
